A temporary detour is in effect for the Appalachian Trail through Bear Mountain State Park .
On Sunday July 9th, 2023 a severe storm caused significant damage to sections of the A.T. between Seven Lakes Drive and the Bear Mountain Bridge. Until these sections can be repaired the Trail is closed to the public and hikers are advised to follow this detour.
Please exercise maximum caution when walking on the roads as there may be traffic.
Detour descriptions (northbound direction):
- All roadwalk: Turn right onto Seven Lakes Drive and follow for 2.2 miles to the traffic circle. Turn left into the parking lot and follow sidewalks north to the Bear Mountain Inn.
- Trail and roadwalk: Turn right onto 1777W Trail (Red 1777 Blazes) and follow for 0.6 mile. Turn left onto Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail (S-BM Yellow Blazes) and follow for 0.65 mile. Turn right onto Seven Lakes Drive and follow for 2.2 miles to the traffic circle. Turn left into the parking lot and follow sidewalks north to the Bear Mountain Inn
From the Bear Mountain Inn hikers will be able to rejoin the A.T. and proceed north across the Bear Mountain Bridge.
Note: Facilities at Bear Mountain Inn are currently unavailable.
