Wappinger Greenway Trail
Park Overview:
From undulating terrain along a creek to sidewalks aside town streets and a lake, the Wappinger Greenway offers a trail system of natural beauty and historic sites.
Park Description:
The Wappinger Greenway Trail consists of an 11-mile figure-eight loop hike of on and off-road trails, encircling lower Wappinger Creek and Wappinger Lake. The white-blazed walking route links natural, historic, industrial, and business districts in the Town of Wappinger, the Village of Wappingers Falls, and the Town of Poughkeepsie in New York’s Dutchess County. A two-page brochure, provided by the Wappinger Greenway Trail Committee, describes some twenty “destinations of interest” and identifies their locations on a walking map.
Trails Overview:
The Wappinger Greenway Trail includes a moderately strenuous 2-mile woods hike along the Wappinger Creek that has a trailhead at a historic industrial park in the Village of Wappinger’s Falls (identified as point “E” on the walking map). The trail follows undulating terrain, with some fairly steep ups and downs into and out of ravines that have been carved by water flowing into the creek. Another access point to this part of the trail is a short walk from Metro-North’s New Hamburg station (walking map reference point “I”).
Several sections along town streets are wheelchair accessible.
- A note of caution, the most northeasterly part of the loop over Wappinger Lake is on busy Route 9 which has no shoulder or pedestrian walkway.
The greenway trail also includes direct paths to Dutchess County’s Bowdoin Park that add another 7 miles of trails to the network.
